For the ones you love

Some good news helped me realise that no matter who your loved ones are, Albany Mega Centre is one of the best places to shop.

I put the phone down but haven’t stop smiling. “I’m going to be a grandma,” I think to myself for the umpteenth time since Karen told me she was pregnant just 15 minutes ago. It feels amazing. I’m so happy that she is going to experience the joys of motherhood. I loved being a mother and I’m going to enjoy being a grandmother even more.

I complete the day’s chores with an extra spring in my step and then drive down to the Albany Mega Centre to pick up a few things for the house. I stop into the Chemist Warehouse. It’s one of my favourite stores and I find myself here on a regular basis. They have such a great selection of products and everything is so well priced.

Karen’s news is still on my mind and I remember back to the morning sickness I had when I was a first-time mum. I find a natural herbal tea which is apparently good for morning sickness. There’s a dedicated section for expectant mums and I pick up a tub of folic acid pills. I hear that they are a good for reducing the chance of birth defects. As I walk around, I find some multi vitamins for pregnancy, a bath bomb that smells amazing and a lovely hand lotion that I know Karen will love.

Not far from the Chemist Warehouse, I stop in front of the Baby Factory. I know it’s way too early to baby shop but I can’t help but go in. I browse through the new-born clothes. There’s so many to choose from and they are beautiful. I wander down to the cots and basinets, past the strollers to the toys. I pick up a baby book and fond memories flood back. I remember the excitement of buying all these things and fitting out the baby’s room. But I also recall how much there is to buy and organise. I decide on a tiny silver rattle for sentiment and a gift voucher to give Karen a good headstart to getting everything she needs. I also take their handy Baby Checklist - Karen will find this really useful.

I stop for lunch and ponder whether all the years have gone. I raised two-kids who both have their own lives now. Making the change from fulltime mum was hard at first but getting Rusty – an SPCA rescue dog – has given my mothering skills a new lease of life. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him. These days he’s my constant companion, caring for me as much as I love him. I wonder if he’s going to like the new baby.

With Rusty still on my mind, I pop into Animates to find him a nice treat. I find his favourite dog treats and then browse through the huge selection of chew toys. I settle on a nice duck that squeaks. I hope I don’t regret this in the middle of the night! But I know Rusty will love it so I buy it for him.

On the drive home I reflect on my purchases and how I was able to find something just right at the Albany Mega Cente for all the loved ones in my life. My daughter, my soon-to-be grandchild and my amazing dog, Rusty.
